ASTM A240 316L Plates are made of austenitic stainless steel. Hot Rolled Stailess Steel ASTM A240 316L Plates contain a higher level of Nickel than 304 giving Cold Rolled ASTM A240 316L Steel Plate an improved corrosion resistance over 304 grades. 316 SS Plate is a good option for marine applications due to a good atmospheric corrosion resistance. 316L is a low carbon modification to 316 grade.

Grade 316L (L= low carbon) ) is the same as 316 except it has an extra-low-carbon analysis, the advantage of which is that it precludes any harmful precipitation in the 800º F to 1500º F range that might result from welding heavier sections. Therefore, ASTM A240 316L Plate is extensively used in heavy gauge welded components. These ASTM A240 316L CR Plates also offer higher creep, stress-to-rupture, and tensile strength at elevated temperatures. In addition to excellent corrosion resistance and strength properties, the ASTM A240 Stainless Steel Plate Sheets also provide excellent fabricability and formability which are typical of the austenitic stainless steels.
